Boot Care Instructions
Photo shows LOWA Z-8 GTX® boots after hard use in open country—the split leather uppers are wet and covered with dirt.
Dirt and moisture have little effect on LOWA boots when properly cared for. With the right maintenance, your boots’ lifespan can be significantly extended. Leather is a natural material, and proper care is essential to maintain its performance and durability.
New boots do not need to be waterproofed right out of the box—the leather has already been pre-treated. We recommend applying Water Stop based on usage. Heavily worn boots may need more frequent treatment. You’ll know it’s time when water no longer beads on the surface.
As a general guideline, reapply every 3–4 months depending on use.
Step 1: Preparation - Remove Insole and Laces
Air dry wet or dirty boots in a well-ventilated area. Do not place boots near direct heat, as this can cause the leather to shrink or crack.
Remove the laces to allow care products to reach all areas of the boot. Remove the insole as well—this is especially important after extended use, as moisture can collect underneath.
Step 2: Cleaning - Removing Dirt from Your Boots
Thoroughly brush your boots using a LOWA Polishing Brush to remove dirt and debris. This helps restore breathability to the leather.
Clean boots with warm water. If heavily soiled, use a mild soap solution such as LOWA Shoe Clean. This helps open the pores of the leather.
Rinse thoroughly.
Do not dry boots in direct sunlight, near heaters, in a bathroom, oven, or hot car. Damp leather can become brittle and prone to cracking. Boots may also develop mildew if stored while damp.
Step 3: Waterproofing
Apply waterproofing spray (e.g., LOWA Water Stop PRO) while the boots are slightly damp. Damp leather allows the treatment to penetrate more effectively.
Full effectiveness is reached after approximately 24 hours. Regular waterproofing helps repel water and dirt while maintaining breathability.
Reapply before your next outing as needed. (Effectiveness typically begins to wear off after several weeks, depending on use.)
Long Term Care
Regular care helps maintain both performance and longevity. After cleaning and drying, apply LOWA Active Cream using a soft brush or cloth.
This helps nourish the leather and prevent drying or cracking over time.
Storage
Store your boots in a cool, dry place. Avoid damp environments, which can lead to mildew.
Do not store boots in direct sunlight or near heat sources.
Take Good Care of the Lining
If you sweat profusely, LOWA Active Cream should be applied, periodically, to leather linings. Salty sweat produced by your feet can dry out the leather, making it brittle and hard.
To maintain breathability, avoid over-applying treatments. Use only recommended products and apply as directed.
Proper care will help preserve the performance of the GORE-TEX® lining over time.
