“Female empowerment has always been an important part of my journey throughout my consulting career to now as an outdoor athlete,” says Sunny. "My experience with gender bias as a high-altitude mountaineer inspired me to create a platform where women can confidently participate in the sport. I am honored to be kicking off the first LOWA Live event and hope that by sharing my own story, I can empower others to reach their goals, as well.”

Sunny Stroer is a longtime LOWA Ambassador and one of the most adventurous people you'll ever meet. In March 2021, she'll be competing in a 350-mile crosscountry race along the Iditarod Trail in Alaska, the famous route that sled dog teams used to deliver vital medicine to the disease-stricken town of Nome in 1925. And rather than mushing a dog team, Sunny is trekking across the Alaskan wilderness on a pair of skis, with everything she needs on her back.

Sunny is also the founder of AWExpeditions, an organization dedicated to helping more women experience the outdoors. She started AWExpeditions because she’s passionate about being a woman who feels at home outside in the world’s wildest places.

More importantly, she’s passionate about bringing more women out there with her. This is why she started the Summit Scholarship. It was created with a simple goal: to break down barriers in the outdoor world and get more women outside. And by “outside” we mean climbing up some of the highest, raddest, and most breathtaking peaks in the world.

Past recipients of the Summit Scholarship have spoken about how much the spending time outdoors has cemented their self-confidence and opened their eyes to breathtaking new experiences. For example, Sunny and scholarship's first recipient Melissa reached Everest Basecamp in Nepal in 2019. Due to COVID-19, the 2020 expedition to Kilimanjaro had to be postponed, but the team will pick it back up this fall if all goes according to plan. For 2021, the scholarship returns with plans to stay closer to home for a climb to the top of Mt. Shasta.
