Tips for Trekkers

With 30 years of travel under her belt, LOWA Ambassador Beth Whitman came to trekking later in life. With the motto, Be Bold, she quickly found herself traversing the Himalayas in Bhutan on the Snowman Trek (considered the most difficult trek in the world), Machu Picchu in Peru, Kilimanjaro in Tanzania and peaks in Washington State, New Mexico, Colorado and Hawaii (yes, Hawaii has peaks!). Whether you’re a beginner or have years of experience, this evening will be packed with practical tips to help you set forth on adventures far and near. Learn packing tips, what to consider when booking your flights, staying safe while on the road and trail, how to save money before and during your travels as well as gear, gadgets and apps that will help make your adventure doable. Beth is the author of the Wanderlust and Lipstick travel guides, the Wanderer in Chief at WanderTours where she leads tours around the world and she’s the host of the She’s Bold Podcast.

Birds of Prey of Southeast Arizona
Presented by Wezil Walraven

Join Wezil Walraven, an experienced field ornithologist and professional bird guide for 40 years, for an interactive course on Identification of Birds of Prey of Southeast Arizona. A presentation with images will display the field marks of raptors so that they can be correctly identified in the field. We will have a classroom conversation at the end and questions will be encouraged. Wezil Walraven has been a professional bird guide for 20 years guiding in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Texas and New Mexico along with Mexico. He began his bird guiding back in Roswell, GA where he was a naturalist at a local nature center. He lead trips to the barrier islands of the GA coast and nighttime Woodcock Courtship Display tours at the nature center. He went on to become an employee of the Southeast Arizona Bird Observatory assisting at bird banding stations and leading bird trips in AZ and Mexico. Later he was a senior guide at High Lonesome Bird Tours an international bird tour company. He founded his own company, Wezil Walraven Bird Tours in 2000.In his many years of guiding, owling became a favorite part of birding, and he has become known as an owl-finding specialist.

From snow-capped glaciated peaks to jungles and some of the most spectacular wildlife on our planet, East Africa is a trip of a lifetime and an adventure not to be missed.. On October 24 we welcome mountain guide and LOWA Ambassador Kurt Wedberg, who will share stories and pictures from this stunning part of the world. From trekking to the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain on the African continent (19,340’) to rock climbing the remote and beautiful Mt. Kenya, to up-close views of wildlife on the magnificent Serengeti plains, this show has something for everyone. Kurt has been a professional mountain guide for 33 years and has 120 major expeditions on his resume, including three successful ascents of Mt. Everest by two different routes and is one of only approximately 400 people worldwide to summit the highest mountain on all seven continents. He has led expeditions to peaks in Africa, Alaska, the Alps, Antarctica, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Indonesia, Mexico, Peru, Russia, Turkey, and the Himalayas. Kurt was a senior guide on Mt. Rainier from 1991 - 2006 and has 122 ascents of this peak and has been mountaineering in the Sierra for over 30 years. He is the founder of Sierra Mountaineering International, Inc. and runs it from his hometown of Bishop, California along the base of the beautiful Eastern Sierra.
