Nestled in a secluded mountain valley, you'll discover spectacular foliage, rustic countryside and a place Charles Kuralt calls, "... a destination."
That place is Mast General Store, in the rural historic district of Valle Crucis, North Carolina.
Since 1883, Mast has been outfitting Appalachians with traditional mercantile goods, comfortable clothing, rugged footwear and quality outdoor gear for all mountain seasons and uses.
The Mast General Store, opened in 1883, tried to carry all of the items their neighbors might need - from plows to cloth and cradles to caskets, which led to the popular saying, "If you can't buy it here, you don't need it."
A few things have changed in the last 120 years (Mast no longer accepts chickens as barter for a sack of flour) but some things are too good to be left behind. Mast continues to be the premier outfitter for Appalachian adventures and beyond.
If the shoe fits…
Anyone who has visited Mast's Footwear Department knows how serious they are about proper fitting shoes.
When shopping for hiking boots, Sales Associates will invite you to fill out a "Fit Card" so you can get a boot that will not only fit your feet, but match the purpose for which they're intended.
Not to be missed:
29th Annual Woolly Worm Festival: Saturday, October 21
Train and bring your own Woolly Worm or purchase one from the "worm stables" at the festival. The winning worm gets the honor of predicting the coming winter's weather.
When in the North Carolina High Country, make a visit to Mast General Store. Warm up by the potbellied stove, mail a letter at the corner post office, and discover for yourself why the National Register of Historic Places calls this one of the finest remaining examples of an old country general store.
